MMT

The MMT encompasses a year-long integrative training program designed for therapists, counselors, psychologists, and coaches interested to work with the nature-based, indigenous-inspired perspective on health, healing and wellbeing, we share at Mountain Medicine.Rooted in the Native American Medicine Wheel, this training offers a clear and experiential framework for integrating core wilderness therapy practices, and elements of indigenous ceremony and tradition, into contemporary therapeutic approaches. At the heart of this lies our ambition to move beyond linear, clinical models of mental and emotional health towards a more circular, existentialist, community-oriented understanding of the human psyche and it’s contemporary challenges. In a seasonal journey through the four directions of the Wheel, East, South, West and North, we explore the natural conditions and context for human growth and development; looking at how health and wellbeing emerge from being in right relationship: with yourself, your community, the natural world, and the great mystery of creation.

About

PURPOSE

Why this offering.

Across the helping professions, many practitioners feel the limits of working only within clinical or cognitive frameworks. There is a growing need—and longing—for approaches that address the soul dimension of human life, that honor existential questions of meaning and belonging, and that reconnect healing to community and the natural world. The Mountain Medicine Training responds to this need by offering a grounded, experiential, and ethically guided way to integrate these approaches into your own practice. It is a place of study and practice, where your work as a practitioner is nourished by the teachings of the Medicine Wheel and by your own direct encounter with its wisdom.

PEOPLE

Who is this for.

The MMT is intended for professionals in the fields of therapy, counseling, coaching, psychology, social work, and related healing arts who are:

  • Seeking to integrate nature-based practices into their professional practice and personal life

  • Curious about ritual, rite of passage, and ceremonial process as therapeutic tools.

  • Drawn to indigenous-inspired, soul-centric approaches to health and healing.

  • Looking for a practical and ethical way to bring these perspectives into their practice.

  • Ready to step away from purely clinical models into a relational, existential, and holistic understanding of the human condition.

PRACTICES

What’s Included in Each Module

The MMT follows a full year cycle, with each module dedicated to one direction of the Medicine Wheel. Each module includes:

  • Expedition: A seasonal 4-day residential gathering (Thursday–Sunday), offering direct experiential immersion into the teachings of the direction.

  • Integration Quest: Take-home Instructions for personal ceremonial work to integrate and activate teachings

  • Bi-weekly calls: Group mentoring sessions with teaching input, dialogue, and Q&A.

  • Bi-weekly challenges: Small, practice-based tasks to practice and deepen the work in sessions with clients.

  • Mentoring Week: A closing week dedicated to individual mentoring sessions, reflection, and tailored guidance.

The process is cumulative—best followed as a complete year-long training—but each direction stands as a vital part of the whole.

PRINCIPLES

The focus of the Mentoring process, is to teach the Mountain Medicine interpretation and application of the Native American Medicine Wheel. As a map for individual and collective development, it may be deployed to incite a two-fold process of cultivating self awareness and self-actualisation towards greater power, love and wisdom. Together, we study the MM Method, a process inspired by the Medicine Wheel and it’s various therapeutic applications. It reflects four primary attachments that shape human health and wellbeing: to creation, to ourselves, to others, and to the world at large Each direction represents both a core need and a therapeutic step in the journey of healing.

  • East – Spirit (Change / Transpersonal)
A Vision for Change: “Cultivating a personal relationship with creation, discovering our unique place in the world, and shaping our own vision for change, to connect to the great mystery.

  • South – Self (Challenge / Personal)
Challenging Stories of the Past: “Challenging misalignments in our personal histories that prevent us from following our authenticity, addressing disruptive patterns and crafting nurturing, constructive and life-giving routines”

  • West – System (Connection / Interpersonal)
Commitment to Connection & Community: Confronting relational dynamics and family patterns that surround us, doing the work necessary to create balance and harmony in our lives, building supportive networks & communities.

  • North – Service (Contribution / Societal)
Making a Meaningful Contribution to Life: “Creating a story of change and transformation, shaping a unique contribution to society based on our own healing journey, sharing our ‘medicine’ with the world around us.
